Yellow Moong Dal / Split Bean Recipe



Yellow moong also known as mung bean and split bean in English has many delicious recipes to its credit. The fastest and simplest of these is Moong Dal. Here's how you prepare thick moong dal:



INGREDIENTS FOR 4 PEOPLE
1 cup moong dal
2 small onions finely chopped
2 small tomatoes finely chopped
1 pinch asafoetida (hing in Hindi)
1/2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
1/2 tsp mustard seeds (rye in Hindi)
1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera in Hindi)
2-4 black peppers (kaali mirch in Hindi)
1-2 slit green chilles
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder (haldi in Hindi)
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
Few drops of lemon juice
Salt to taste
Oil to fry, around 1 tbsp
8-10 curry leaves(curry patta in Hindi)
Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

MOONG DAL PREPARATION METHOD

1 - After washing the moong dal properly, keep it soaked in 1 cup water for around 30 minutes. It softens a bit. Do Away with this water.
2 - Pressure cook the dal with water (equivalent to the amount of soaked dal), salt and turmeric powder for 2 whistles.
3 - Heat oil in a pan, add asafoetida, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, black pepper, curry leaves and green chillies.
4 - Add onions with a pinch of salt and fry until golden brown. Add ginger garlic paste and then tomatoes.
4 - Add the cooked moong dal, red chilli powder and cook on a\medium / low flame for a while.
5 - Remove from flame, add a few drops of lemon juice and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
