Too tired to spend time in the kitchen? This Tomato Rasam recipe will save you time and energy. The best part is that the Rasam tastes really good and it appears that a lot of effort has got into it ;)
Tomato rasam recipe ingredients:
Tur / Arhar Dal (split pigeon peas) - 1 to 2 tbsp depending on how much dal you like in rasam
Tamarind - 2 tsps
Tomatoes - 2 medium
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Fresh coriander leaves - 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Pepper powder - 1/4 tsp
Jeera powder - 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder - as per requirement
Rasam powder - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida - 1 pinch
Water - 2-3 cups
Oil
Tomato rasam recipe preparation:
Boil tur dal with salt.
Meanwhile, prepare tamarind pulp (using warm water). In a pan, heat the tamarind pulp with tomatoes and mash them together. Add coriander leaves, some salt (remember you have also added salt to tur dal), turmeric powder, rasam powder, pepper powder, jeera powder and red chilli powder. Add the boiled dal and water and let it simmer. Stir occasionally and turn off the gas in 5-10 minutes. Add tadka.
How to prepare tadka:
Heat 1tsp oil, add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add curry leaves and carefully add the tadka carefully to the rasam preparation.
Tip: In absence of Rasam powder, some amount of Sambar powder can be used. In absence of tamarind, you can use raw mango powder (amchur) but the taste will be a bit different.
